mistreatments & misbeheaviers

With profound sadness, I have to inform you that my mother-in-law, Sudharani Saha, died on February 25, 2011, at AMRI Hospital at Dhakuria, Kolkata, which we thought is one of the best health-care places in Kolkata. To our amazement, we have discovered that we were totally wrong about this place. In fact, the complaints about the AMRY Hospital are outrageous and incomprehensible. I am absolutely certain that you all are aware of the dismal records of AMRI as stated and recorded in the following websites:

In a nut shell, my mother-in-law became ill from cold-related symptoms and therby was taken to a nursing home at her home town, Bardhaman. Doctors at Bardhaman suggested that she ought to be transferred to AMRI Hospital, Kolkata. That is exactly what was done and my mother-in-law was admitted to AMRI on February 12, 2011. For the first two days after her admission, Dr. S. K. Todi at AMRI Hospital kept telling my wife and her sister that their mother’s conditions were improving and in a few days she will be fine and their doctors would be able to take her off the ventilation. Strangely enough, Dr. Todi left Kolkata for about week, telling everyone there at AMRI that he had to go to a Medical Conference somewhere in India. While Dr. Todi was away from the hospital, he assigned Dr. Susmita Basu to be in-charge of the IC Unit. Unfortunately, Dr. Basu proved to be a very incompetent physician and was of no help to us. More than a week later, Dr. Todi came back and told my wife and her sister that their mother is in critical condition; therefore, nothing else can be done! Therefore, she should be taken back to Bardhaman, preferably back to her home where she can take her last breath or simply die. My wife and her sister were faced with a very difficult decision to take their mother off the ventilation. As such, the ventilation was replaced with regular oxygen in order to see how long she could breathe on her own and eventually she could be taken to Bardhaman. Unfortunately, she passed away shortly thereafter. It was told by the ICU doctors at AMRI that her body would be kept for a couple of hours just to allow the family members to arrive there and see the body; but that was not the case. Her body was quickly mutilated beyond recognition and completely wrapped up by plastic sheets! No explanations were given to our relatives for such heinous acts by ARMI nurses/doctors. In fact, to make the matter worse, no personnel including doctors responsible for her treatment were found nearby. This is the most unprofessional behavior displayed by the health-care providers at AMRI.

According to my wife, doctors at AMRI are money suckers and they are not there to save a patient’s life, but to transform patient into an unusually critical condition so that the patient’ relatives will panic which will give the hospital an ample opportunity to make their bills and charges to grow perpetually larger and larger! In our case, some of the charges in the bills did not have any explanations. Also, to say the least, the pharmacy workers at AMRI are untruthful. For example, they were charging for medicine without even giving the medicine to patient. Is this a policy of AMRI Management? Now the question is: whom should we blame for all these atrocities? Frankly, no one knows. In fact, my wife has met at AMRI Hospital with many patients' relatives who also expressed the same views about AMRI. Obviously, I would like to make a formal complaint against this hospital, and particularly, against the gross negligence of Dr. Todi.
Finally, this kind of gross negligence by the AMRI doctors and management is totally unacceptable. As a matter of fact, this kind of unprofessional act by AMRI doctors must be stopped before they cause further agony and pains to many other poor families. Therefore, my only hope is that the new government of the people in West Bengal will do whatever necessary to punish these hospitals and nursing homes whose sole goal has been to make money by killing, not by curing the poor patients!
